Atelier Flagey is committed to presenting a selection of instruments by some of the most renowned contemporary violin and bow makers in Europe. Musicians - beginners, students or professionnals - can assess the qualities of different instruments and bows and compare them in the best circumstances.
We try to offer the most appropriate service to each one of our clients: New making, restoration, repairs, maintenance, sound adjustments, rehairs & expertise.
In 2014, Atelier Flagey created Ekho, an association that seeks to encourage the dialogue between musicians, their instruments and violin makers through exhibitions, concerts, lectures...
Joanne Van Bosterhaut
LUTHIèRE / VIolin maker
FR_Joanne Van Bosterhaut commence son apprentissage musical dès l’enfance grâce au violoncelle.
Parallèlement à des études de musicologie à l’Université Libre de Bruxelles, dont le master se clôture avec le mémoire intitulé : L’insertion du violoncelle à Bruxelles au XVIIIe siècle ; un regard sur la facture et sur la composition pour violoncelle et basse continue, elle entame une formation de lutherie au Centrum voor Muziekinstrumentenbouw de Puurs, en Belgique.
En 2013, elle rejoint l'Atelier Flagey à Bruxelles au côté de la luthière Catherine Janssens et des archetiers Robert Pierce, Blaise Emmelin, Daoudi Hassoun et Victor Bernard. Elle est également membre fondateur de l’asbl Ekho créée en 2014 qui a pour but de promouvoir la lutherie contemporaine. La relation entre le luthier et le musicien est primordiale dans l’évolution de ses recherches sur la sonorité, la projection du son et le confort de ses instruments.
Joanne Van Bosterhaut poursuit sa formation de luthier principalement auprès de luthiers reconnus tels qu’Isabelle Wilbaux, Philippe Van Geffel, Tanguy Fraval et Francis Kuttner à Crémone.
En 2016, la Fondation Roi Baudoin lui octroie une bourse de soutien dans le cadre de : Plateforme pour l'Education et le Talent. Elle participe à des expositions de lutherie internationales (Bruxelles, Vienne, Tokyo...).
Elle est membre de l'ALADFI (association des luthiers et archetiers pour le développement de la facture instrumentale) et de l'UAP (Union des artisans du patrimoine).
EN_Joanne Van Bosterhaut began her musical apprenticeship at a young age through playing the cello. In 2005, while studying Musicology at the Université Libre de Bruxelles where her master’s degree ended with the thesis entitled “The introduction of the violoncello to 18th century Brussels; a look at construction methods and also compositions for cello and bass continuo”.
She started training as a violin maker at the Centrum voor muziekinstrumentenbouw in Puurs, Belgium.
In 2013, she joined the Atelier Flagey in Brussels with the violinmaker Catherine Janssens, and with Robert Pierce, Blaise Emmelin, Daoudi Hassoun and Victor Bernard, all bow makers.
She is a founding member of Ekho, created in 2014, an association dedicated to the promotion of contemporary instrument making. Her masters degree already anticipates her interest in the relationship between musical composition for strings and the evolution of violin making. The relationship between violin maker and musician is fundamental in the evolution of her research on sonority and in the development of the player-comfort of her instruments.
Joanne Van Bosterhaut furthered her training with well known violin makers such as Isabelle Wilbaux (Montreal), Philippe Van Geffel (Brussels), Lorenzo Frignani (Modena), Tanguy Fraval (Britain) and Francis Kuttner (Cremona). She also takes part in international violin making exhibition (Brussels, Vienna, Tokyo...).
In 2016, Fondation Roi Baudoin awarded her a scholarship in the framework of the “Platform for Education and Talent”.
She is members of ALADFI (association des luthiers et archetiers pour le développement de la facture instrumentale) and UAP ( Union des artisans du patrimoine).

Victor Bernard
Archetier / Bow maker
Victor Bernard est né en 1985 à Compiègne.
Il étudie à l'Ecole Internationale de Lutherie de Newark en Angleterre où il obtient son diplôme en 2008.
Passionné par l'archèterie, il rejoint la Maison Bernard à Bruxelles la même année. Il travaille au côté de Pierre Guillaume qui lui enseigne la fabrication, la restauration et lui transmet sa passion pour les archets anciens et l’expertise.
En octobre 2014, Victor rejoint l’Atelier Flagey à Bruxelles où il travaille au côté des luthiers Catherine Janssens et Joanne Van Bosterhaut.
Il devient membre d’Ekho, une association créée afin de promouvoir la lutherie et l’archeterie contemporaine.
En 2014, la Fondation Marcel Vatelot lui attribue une bourse pour l’aider dans le développement de son atelier et à la préparation aux concours internationaux d’archèterie.
Il multiplie les expériences auprès des archetiers Georges Tepho, Eric Fournier à Quimper, Eric Grandchamp à Crozon, Noel Burke, Robert Morrow, Stéphane Thomachot au Bantry Festival en Ireland et Emmanuel Carlier à Paris.
Il participe régulièrement à des expositions d’archeterie internationales, Belgique, France, Allemagne, Angleterre, Ireland, Etats-Unis, Japon…
En 2020, la Fondation Roi Baudouin et le Fonds Sofina Boël lui accordent une bourse afin d’enrichir son savoir-faire en archèterie.

EN_Victor Bernard was born in 1985 in Compiegne, France.
At 20 years old, he crossed the Channel to study his passion at the Newark School of Violin Making from where he graduated in 2008.
Passionate about bow making, he joined Maison Bernard in Brussels the same year to work under Pierre Guillaume’s expertise in bow making and restoration where he was able to develop his taste for antique bows and grow his expertise.
In 2014, he joined the Atelier Flagey in Brussels and work alongside with violinmakers Catherine Janssens and Joanne Van Bosterhaut.
Victor is an member of Ekho, an association created for the promotion of contemporary violin and bow making.
In 2014, he received a grant from the Marcel Vatelot Foundation to help him develop his workshop and prepare international bow making competitions.

Blaise Emmelin
Archetier / Bow maker
FR 1988-1991 : après quatre années de menuiserie, je suis apprenti en archèterie chez Pierre Guillaume, au sein de la Maison Bernard à Bruxelles. J’apprends la fabrication, l’entretien, l’expertise et la restauration d’archets anciens.
1991-1994 : je collabore avec Tom Wilder et Richard Davis, luthiers à Montréal et étudie la mécanique des sons et le réglage d’instruments.
1994-1998 : je collabore avec Günter Siefert, luthier à Dijon puis ensuite forme mon premier apprenti, Jancsi Roth.
1998 : je collabore étroitement avec Robert Pierce, archetier à Bruxelles. Ce sont les prémices de l’Atelier Flagey, un collectif qui propose aux musiciens des rencontres autour de la lutherie et de l’archèterie.
2003-2OO9 : je collabore avec Xavier Walger, luthier à Toulouse. Je forme puis collabore avec Éric Gagné.
2010-2013 : je partage un atelier avec Hervé Lahoun, luthier de guitare à Salles sur l’Hers.
2014- : je m’installe à Port-Vendres. Inspiré par les grands maîtres français des XIXe et XXe siècles et par tous les artisans rencontrés sur mon parcours, je crée mes archets dans un pernambouc de choix, de manière traditionnelle mais également innovante pour mes modèles plus personnels.

EN_1988-1991: After four years of cabinet making, I was apprenticed to Pierre Guillaume in the renowned Maison Bernard in Brussels where I learned bow making, repairing, restoration and expertise in older bows.
1991-1998: Worked together with Tom Wilder and Richard Davis, violin makers in Montreal where I studied the mechanics of sound and instrument adjustment.
1994-1998: Collaborated with Günter Siefert, violin maker, in Dijon. I also accepted my first apprentice, Jancsi Roth.
1998: Close collaboration with Robert Pierce, bow maker, in Brussels. We set up the Atelier Flagey as a shared enterprise. The Atelier Flagey now organises international events to promote contemporary violin and bow making.
2003-2OO9: Worked with Xavier Walger, violin maker in Toulouse. I trained and subsequently worked together with Éric Gagné.
2010-2013: Shared a workshop with Hervé Lahoun, guitar maker at Salles sur l’Hers.
Since 2014: Established workshop in Port-Vendres. Inspired by the great French masters of the 19th and 20th centuries and by all the craftsmen I’ve met along the way, I create and construct bows from choice Pernambuco in the traditional manner but innovative at the same time in my more personal models.
